French Bulldog – Playful and Smart

French Bulldog, also called Frenchie, is a small, compact, well-muscled dog with a broad and square head. The breed has broad, upright ears that are rounded at the tips and the nose is black, but can be lighter in lighter dogs. The face is more pleasant than that of other breeds and the wrinkling isn’t so heavy.

The Frenchie has round and dark eyes set wide apart. The chest is deep and broad with the front of the breed being broader than the back end, creating a pear shape. The coat colors of the French bulldog are fawn, brindle, white as well as brindle and white.

History of the breed

The French Bulldog can claim part of its ancestry in England. They were kept by French lace makers in England in 1800s. The English people had not accepted the smaller type of the Bulldog that the French kept in their country. The French lace makers, threatened by the industrial revolution, left for France in 1860s, taking their dogs with them. There, they started to breed specific personalities in these bulldogs to distinguish them from the English Bulldogs.

French Bulldog Playful and Smart

As the breed became popular, the French renamed them after their own country. The breed has seen a rise in popularity in recent years. From 2009 to late 2015 the registrations for this breed increased 10 fold.

Personality and Temperament

Despite her glum look, the French Bulldog is cheerful, entertaining and affectionate. Frenchie puppies are particularly frisky, and chasing balls are one of their passions. Adults are more distinguished, but also love to play around. Most French Bulldogs are friendly with everybody, while some are politely reserved. While this breed possesses a stubborn nature, she responds well to early, patient, consistent training.

French Bulldog Personality and Temperament

Don’t tolerate or reward any kind of unwanted behaviors. Most French Bulldogs can’t swim so pool owners need to keep a watchful eye on their dogs. Bear in mind that if you are planning to go on a beach vacation, your little friend may feel left out.

French Bulldog Exercise Needs

Every dog breed needs some exercise and the Frenchie is not an exception. The Frenchies should get kept active all the time and taken on a daily walk. The French Bulldogs are flat nosed and so they shouldn’t get exercised in hot temperatures as they may have problems regulating their body temperature.

Hot and humid weather spell trouble for all canines, but for Frenchies it may be life threatening. If you think it may be too hot outside for a walk, it is advised to do it during the early and later hours of the day. Some vets advise that you shouldn’t walk your Frenchie to temperatures over 70 degrees in Fahrenheit.

French Bulldog Suitability as a Family Pet

Families that need a loving dog turn to Frenchie. The breed’s playfulness, affection, and willingness to please everyone have become a fast favorite amongst young families with small children at home. They are good for little children. They can grow up with them and become great family pets.

French Bulldogs love short walks and hours of dawdling on the sofa. They will also spend a lot of time indoors running and play with their owners on the floor. They hardly bark for no reason, yet they will alert their master when someone is at the door and will go out of their way to defend their family.

French Bulldog Known Health Issues

Like all dog breeds, Frenchies have health issues. These health issues are, however, far lesser compared to their ancestors, the English Bulldogs. With the short nose, all Bulldogs have breathing issues when compared to long-nosed breeds. As a result, they have problems with extreme weather and long stretches of exercise.

Like most dogs, this breed may have an issue known as Hip Dysplasia, a common condition that happens when the femur does not fit well into the hip joint. Another concern is that female Frenchies deliver puppies through C-section, due to the puppies’ big heads.

There you have it! Everything you needed to know about the French Bulldog. The breed is sociable and friendly that it relates very well to humans and other animals. Be aware of your dog’s health issues as this is the key to her happy life. If you do this for your little friend, she will be an obedient and protective companion for years.
