State kills 1 member of OPT wolf pack for killing cattle

Animals And Pets, Wolf,

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Hunters employed by the state of Washington have killed a radio-collared wolf that was preying on livestock in the Kettle River range of Ferry County.

The adult male member of the OPT wolf pack was killed last Saturday after the pack was found to be repeatedly killing livestock.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has now entered an evaluation period to determine if killing the wolf will change the pack's behavior. If it does not, the state can authorize the killing of more wolves in the pack.

The state killed two members of the pack last September in an effort to change its behavior.

Conservation groups have complained that the state is too quick to kill wolves at the behest of ranchers.
